Range Rules
1.1 Range rules
The following rules have been approved by the SSAA Northern Rivers Branch Committee.
1.1.1. The Range Officer has total control over range activities.
1.1.2. Red means Danger. A red flag at the entrance gate (and up-range at the furthest line of targets) means that shooters are in attendance at the range and permission from the Range Officer is required before entering the Range Danger Zone (forward of the firing line). A red sign “Range Open”, or red flag on the firing line also indicates that it is not safe to go forward of the firing line.
1.1.3. Shooting is not to commence until flags, frames and targets have been placed in accordance with Range Standing Orders and the Range has been OPENED by the Range Officer.
1.1.4. No-one may go forward of the firing line without the permission of the Range Officer. The Range Officer will indicate that it is safe for the target crew or other designated persons to go forward of the firing line by calling “THE RANGE IS CLOSED” S/he will display a green sign “Range Closed” on the firing line.
1.1.5. The wearing of EAR protection and appropriate footwear is mandatory while the use of EYE protection is recommended. ( Eye protection is compulsory for Metallic Silhouette Targets, percussion and flintlock firearms and handguns.)
1.1.6. Shooters must report to the Range Officer, show SSAA membership and Firearms Licence, sign the range register and pay any fees required before bringing firearms on to the range.
1.1.7. Firearms are to be removed from vehicles in a safe condition ie unloaded. For handguns this means in a case/bag. Longarms can be bagged or uncovered. For uncovered longarms the Range must be open, the firearm must have the action open, the magazine empty and removed where possible and be carried with the muzzle held vertical.
1.1.8. Once uncased, longarms are to be carried to the storage rack or firing point with the muzzle in the air and pointed at a slight angle down range. A handgun must not be uncased unless in the safe handling area or at the firing line, with the Range Officers instruction to do so. Firearms are not to be handled until the range is opened.
1.1.9. Children and Juniors at the range must be supervised and not permitted near the firing line unless accompanied by a Range Officer, Club Coach or a supervisor delegated by the Range Officer. Junior shooters must be over 12 years old and either be covered by a temporary membership or a Minors Permit before being allowed to shoot.
1.1.10. Only one shooter is to be at each firing point. Coaches must stand behind or clear of the shooter when the firearm is loaded.
1.1.11. Any firearm malfunction must be reported to the Range Officer immediately.
1.1.12. No-one, including the Range Officer, is to touch another persons firearm(s) without the permission of the owner.
1.1.13. Firearms are not to be removed from the firing point until cleared by the Range Officer. When cleared only rifles with bolts removed may be left on the bench, all other firearms will be racked with actions open.
1.1.14. Handling of firearms on the firing line is not permitted when the Range is CLOSED.
1.1.15. Firearms are to be cleaned only at the firing point or in the designated safe area.
1.1.16. Adjustment to firearms that compromise range safety are not permitted behind the firing point (i.e. lightening of triggers, snapping actions, testing the fit of ammunition)
1.1.17. Unless the Range Officer advises otherwise, all shooting is single round loading only.
1.1.18. Smoking is not permitted on the Firing Line or in the Reloading Areas.
1.1.19. Alcohol or drugs are not to be consumed or taken by a shooter prior to or during shooting.
1.1.20. Magazines are not to contain ammunition unless the shooter has been instructed to load by the Range Officer.
1.1.21. No Pistol is to be loaded until the competitor has been instructed to load by the Range Officer.
1.1.22. Pistol magazines are not to be loaded other than at the firing line after the command to load has been given by the Range Officer.
1.1.23. Holstered pistols cannot be taken from the holster unless instructed to do so by the Range Officer, or in a safe area designated for cleaning or storage.
1.1.24. LOADED PISTOLS must be handled with particular care because of the short barrel. The muzzle of a loaded pistol must be held pointed down range in a safe direction with the shooter facing the target.
1.1.25. When firing semi-automatic pistols from the benches (i.e. from within the shed) single round loading only is permitted, unless authorisation is given by the Range Officer.
1.1.26. When firing any pistol from the benches (i.e. from within the shed) the firing position will be taken closest to the middle of each 4m bay, unless authorisation is given by the Range Officer.
