Branch received advice from the Firearms Registry Range Inspector that centrefire rifles using jacketed projectiles will be limited to a maximum calibre 8mm.
This is because the range reserve provides a safety template which is smaller than the template required for rifles using jacketed projectiles of a greater calibre. The maximum muzzle energy of any firearm used on the range remains at 4182 ft-lbs.
While firearms of a greater than 8mm calibre can be used with lead projectiles, so long as the muzzle energy complies, this is not of any practical use for those members who have rifles with larger calibres and want to use jacketed projectiles.
This directive will remain in force until further advised.
Failure to comply can lead to loss of licence and firearms by the individual and the Range Approval of the Branch.
